As you prepare for winter weather, it’s important also to get your vehicle ready. Making sure that your vehicle is ready for the cold can be a critical safety issue. In this article, we look at how you can prepare your vehicle for winter driving.

Get your vehicle’s battery tested

Cold weather can be hard on car batteries, especially when they’re nearing the end of their life. Make sure that your battery is in working condition before temperatures drop. Car batteries can last on average, anywhere between two and five years. If you’re not sure about your battery, it’s best to test.

Check your windshield wipers

Don’t wait until you’re caught in bad weather to find out that your wiper blades need replacing. Like testing your battery, you should test your wiper blades in good weather. Good wiper blades will make sure that you don't have a streaky, obscured windshield. For serious winter preparation, you can even buy winter wipers that prevent freezing.

Check your fluid levels

When winter comes, trade out your antifreeze for one that will tolerate colder temperatures. Choosing the right windshield washer fluid for winter is also important. Choose a washer fluid containing antifreeze to prevent freezing on your windshield.

Invest in quality tires

If you live in an area with mild temperatures, all-season radial tires may be all that you need. Get some good winter tires if you live in a heavier snowfall area. A quality set of winter tires can help you maintain control through snow and wet conditions.

Keep a winter emergency kit

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle fitted for winter conditions. Your kit should include chains, windshield washer fluid, sand or cat litter for vehicle traction, a small shovel, and a snow brush or a scraper. Also, pack flashlights, blankets, food, water, winter clothing, and a first aid kit.
